    Let’s go fishing! Join the National Park Service for a fun experience in the park at the beautiful Island Ford and Sibley Ponds. No matter if you are a natural-born angler or a beginner, these fishing opportunities are just right for you. This is a catch and release fishing program. All ages are welcome!

    Location: Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area

    Island Ford Unit & Island Ford Pond: park in the second parking lot located above the pond at 1978 Island Ford Parkway Sandy Springs, Georgia, 30350. Restrooms are located in the Hewlett Lodge Visitor Center.

    Sope Creek Unit & Sibley Pond Cochran Shoals Unit: 

    3726 Paper Mill Rd SE, Marietta, GA 30067.

    There are no restrooms at this site, but are located close by at Terrell Mill Park; 480 Terrell Mill Rd. Marietta, GA 30067 (1.5 miles).
    This will be easy fishing suitable for elementary aged children.

    Note: Adults are welcome to fish, but MUST POSSESS A GEORGIA FISHING LICENSE. Kids under 16 years of age do not need a license.

    Remember to dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a path along a pond. Do not forget sunscreen and a hat is a good idea. Bring water and you might want to include snacks or even a picnic.

    A daily entrance fee or annual pass is needed.
    For safety and quality, these fishing experiences are limited to 20 kids under 16 years of age. All kids must be accompanied by an adult.

    Pollinator Garden Workday at Island Ford 

    April 1, 9 AM - 12 PM

    The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and The Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy have partnered with Georgia Audubon to rejuvenate the area in front of the Visitor Center into a pollinator garden.  Work will be supervised by Georgia Audubon but we need your help.

    Registration is required to attend and is limited to 10 volunteers. 

    We plan to meet outside of the Visitor Center of the Island Ford unit of CRNRA (8800 Roberts Drive, Sandy Springs, GA 30350). There are parking spots available just outside the garden area, near the Visitor Center. CRNRA requires a $5 daily parking fee or the purchase of a $40 annual pass. The pollinator garden we will be working in is located just outside of the Visitor Center.

    Join Park Ranger Jerry Hightower for these fun early evening campfire programs. Young and young at heart start this early evening adventure in the shallows at the spillway of the beautiful pond looking for minnows, turtles, tadpoles, and froglets. You are invited to bring your own marshmallows if you like to roast marshmallows over the campfire. We will provide roasting forks. Complete the evening with a very leisurely sunset stroll around Sibley Pond and discover the beautiful sights and sounds of nature as twilight wanes. The evening’s activities are very casual and very informal.

    Location: 3760 Paper Mill Road; Marietta, Georgia 30068. From the bulletin board at the parking area follow the trail to the pond. We will meet at the wooden deck.

    Difficulty: A very leisurely stroll to and around the pond.

    Bring: Please remember to wear comfortable outdoor clothes. Spring evenings can be quite chilly, you might want to bring a jacket. Be sure to bring WATER and you might want to include snacks. You are welcome to come early and bring a picnic.

    Join the Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy for our April Community Hike

     

    SATURDAY, April 22

     1o AM - 1 PM

    Bowmans Island unit of Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA)      

    Discover the Southwestern section of the official Bowman’s Island trails and explore the Buford Trout Hatchery (https://georgiawildlife.com/buford-trout-hatchery). We will start with a self-guided tour of the Hatchery, followed by a 3 mile hike. The trails travel through the forest along the river and offer excellent river views. The hike is an easy level hike, although sturdy shoes are required.

    This event will take place rain or shine, however it will be rescheduled in the event of severe weather including thunderstorms or flood warnings. Participants will be notified by email the morning of the event (or sooner) should an event need to be rescheduled due to weather.

    Chattahoochee River Environmental Education Center Program, Campfire, and Sunset Stroll

     Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a campfire, program on the covered upper deck, sunset stroll, and a beautiful spring evening concluding another day on the Chattahoochee. Discover new facts about wildlife of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and the state of Georgia. Enjoy the campfire and the twilight. The activities are very casual and informal. You are invited to bring your own marshmallows if you like to roast marshmallows over the campfire. We will provide roasting forks. Join us and enjoy the ambiance, and beauty of twilight on the Chattahoochee. You are welcome to come early and bring a picnic dinner. After the program you are invited to join us on a short twilight walk on the Three Forks Loop Trail.

    Parking is limited and carpooling is encouraged.

    Facilities: Located in the Center’s Lodge

    Difficulty: Easy level walking
