Join National Park Service Ranger, Jerry Hightower, for a wonderful summer morning walk in search of wildflowers, ferns, and signs of wildlife! Enjoy the beautiful forest, grand vistas of Thornton and Devil’s Race Course Shoals, and the dramatic palisades. This is an extraordinarily scenic area with the steep cliffs of Devil’s Stair Steps rising from the waters of the Narrows at Diving Rock Beach.
We will proceed up river to Sandy Point before beginning our return. This is a great opportunity to maybe see a Great Blue Heron take wing, spot a salamander, or see the prints of previous night’s wildlife in the mud. Please join us for this walk through an area of fantastic beauty.

Location: We will meet in the parking area of Akers Mill; 2361 Akers Drive, Atlanta, Georgia, 30339

Restrooms: Located at Devil’s Stair Step three quarters of the way thought the hike

Difficulty: Moderately strenuous with a steep ¼ mile return to the parking area

Bring: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. Dress in layers so that you can adjust to changes in the temperature and activity level. A hat might be a good idea BRING ADEQUATE WATER and you might include snacks. You may wish to bring binoculars and a hand lens. Note: A daily entrance fee or annual pass is needed.

Limit: 30 persons

Heat warning: As summer temperatures soar and heat incidents increase across the park, CNPC urges attendees to stay safe by being well-prepared for high temperatures. Please bring plenty of water (often more than you think you'll need!), list a reliable emergency contact, and know your limits. Be aware of the serious signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, including heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. Events may be canceled if temperatures become too extreme. Your safety is our priority.

This event will take place rain or shine, however it will be rescheduled in the event of severe weather including thunderstorms or flood warnings. Participants will be notified by email the morning of the event (or sooner) should an event need to be rescheduled due to weather.
