Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area
Cochran Shoals Northern Floodplain Area
Description: Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower and enjoy a winter walk while learning more of the area’s natural and cultural history. This is a leisurely hike along a very level floodplain. Like much of the river corridor, this area has been used by humans for over 10,000 years. Perhaps farmed for centuries, Native Americans once lived on this land. It was the site of the Judge Eugene Gunby’s horse farm. Today it boasts a returning young bottomland forest and important river bottomland wetlands. The wetlands attract more birds and a greater diversity of birds than other habitats. Along the edge of the river, you will see old water oaks, river birch, and sycamores. With the leaves gone, we will be about to better appreciate this area’s beautiful landscape. Join us and discover this wonderful wildlife viewing area.
