MAGNOLIAS AND RIDGE TOPS
Wednesday, May 15
2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Description: Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a great loop hike through the oak-hickory ridge forest, mesic forest, and the ridge top trail on the steep slopes above the scenic Vickery Creek Ravine. We will see a very large, big-leaved Umbrella Magnolia.
Our loop will take us past beautiful areas with native ferns, shrubs, and wildflowers. The ridge-top trail shows plants that survive in shallow soils, cliff areas, and dry conditions. This is a great trail to discover.
Facilities: Trees and thick shrubs.
Difficulty: This hike is moderately strenuous with a few steep slopes. These walks are quite slow with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.
Bring: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. Bring water, and you might include snacks. You may wish to bring binoculars and a hand lens. Note: A daily entrance fee or annual pass is needed.
Limit: 30 persons
